Why Bravery Isn’t Always What It Seems

What is bravery?

It’s not always what it seems.

Bravery is like walking into the dark without a spark to light the way.
Bravery is like jumping deep into the ocean, not knowing if you can swim.
Bravery is like being naked on a stage with no props or script to guide you.

Bravery feels messy.
It exposes, it stings, and sometimes it is downright painful.

But bravery isn’t supposed to feel good.

Bravery means embodying fear and moving forward in spite of it.
Bravery is putting one foot in front of the other even while you’re trembling.
Bravery is ignoring the voice in your head in service of your soul.

I don’t feel like a brave person, but I know that I’ve had to be.
It’s been a necessary act in service of growth. In service of healing.

I’ve looked fear in the eye. Held its gaze until I could barely move.

But I kept going.

Sometimes it hurt. Sometimes I fell.

And some days I didn’t want to get back up.
